RapidScale Responds to CrowdStrike Outage with Speed and Scale

On Friday, July 19th, 2024, banks, airlines, hospitals, retail chains, law enforcement agencies, and government offices around the world woke up to the blue screen of death. CrowdStrike, a world-leading cloud cybersecurity provider, issued a faulty sensor update causing millions of devices to go offline, with some systems facing challenges for several weeks.

RapidScale, a Cox Business Company, was quick to step in, restoring regular operations within 24 hours to all its clients.

What Caused the CrowdStrike Outage?

Overnight, CrowdStrike released a routine update of its Falcon sensor security software intended to help detect security threats for businesses across the globe. Faulty code that should have been caught during quality assurance reviews made it through to the update, resulting in global outages for companies using the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Ultimately, 8.5 million devices were impacted, including those used by more than half of Fortune 500 companies. In all, more than 5,000 flights were canceled. Some experts estimate the cost of the outage to be more than $1 billion.

RapidScale’s Response to the CrowdStrike Outage

RapidScale, a Cox Business Company, is prepared for incidents like the CrowdStrike outage. Our team of experts was up in the early hours of the morning, working together to assess the issue. They quickly determined there was no way to mass-deploy or automate a solution, and the fix would require manually updating the faulty code in each affected client’s servers. So, our team got to work and resolved approximately 60 servers every five minutes.

The result? All of RapidScale’s customers’ issues were resolved by the following night.
