The State of Email & Collaboration Security in 2024

Business email and collaboration tools continue to pose a significant cybersecurity risk. According to Mimecast’s 2024 State of Email and Collaboration Security report, four in 10 businesses surveyed said they’ve experienced more email-based threats in the past 12 months. A similar number see the growing sophistication of these attacks as their biggest email security challenge.

“While email remains their primary route of attack, bad actors are also taking advantage of how collaboration tools expand an organization’s attack surface,” the report’s authors note. Indeed, seven in 10 respondents say collaboration tools pose urgent new threats and believe it likely that a collaboration tool-based attack will harm them.

Not surprisingly, 86% of respondents said their organization needs to invest more in cyber defenses with top priorities being greater email security (cited by 45%) and greater collaboration tool security (cited by 44%).

To optimize your cybersecurity investments, consider a solution like Security as a Service (SECaaS), delivered by RapidScale, a Cox Business Company that can protect both your business email and collaboration tools against modern cyberattacks.

Top Risks for Business Email & Collaboration Tools

Mimecast’s report identifies several risks related to email and collaboration applications. These include:

  • Human Risk – Three in four respondents say their company data is at risk due to careless or negligent employees, yet only 15% of businesses provide ongoing cybersecurity training.
  • Email Attacks – Phishing, spoofing, ransomware, and other email-based cyberattacks remain the most common methods for cybercriminals to infiltrate an organization.
  • SaaS Attacks – Software as a service (SaaS) applications continue to grow in popularity but open new vulnerabilities that threat actors can exploit.
  • AI-powered Attacks – Eight in 10 respondents are concerned about cyberthreats leveraging new AI technology, and 67% believe AI-spawned attacks will become inevitable over the next few months.
  • Insufficient Funding – Cybersecurity professionals report being stifled by inadequate funding and pressure to use security tools included in collaboration tools like Microsoft 365, which aren’t adequate for protecting against modern cyberthreats.
