Cox Business Domain Name System Hosting Services

Solution

Domain Name Hosting

Cox Business is decommissioning the DNS Services infrastructure that provides records used to locate services such as websites and email servers.

If Cox is your DNS hosting provider, to prevent any disruption to your business email or websites, then you need to contact a different provider for DNS hosting and transfer your records prior to December 11, 2024. The decommission program begins in September 2024 through December 2024. You can reach the program team at 866-737-8187 between the hours of 8 a.m. - 5p.m. ET, Monday through Friday or email dnsrecords@cox.com.

Notes:

  • Webhosting Customers and Pointer Records (PTR), also known as reverse pointers, will not be impacted.
  • You can still make requested changes to existing records during the migration.

If you have Webmail services with Cox Business using a domain you own, when you migrate your DNS records, you will need to point your MX Record to mx.coxmail.com to avoid impacting email services.

Perform a Who.Is lookup to determine if Cox is the Authorative Domain.

If... Then...
The Authoritative DNS servers for your domain are defined as Cox nameservers You can contact your registrar to mirror the DNS records Cox is currently hosting.
  • Most registrars offer DNS hosting service at no additional charge.
  • Cox does not recommend any one registrar, but here are a few commonly used ones.
  • Upon completion of those entries, the Name Servers will need to be repointed to this new registrar’s servers and not pointed to NS1.COXMAIL.COM or NS2.COXMAIL.COM.
  • After the DNS records are updated with your new authoritative registrar, allow 24-48 hours for those DNS records to propagate prior to changing the Name Servers.
  • You should validate all aspects of their hosting services upon completion of the migration.
The Authoritative DNS servers for your domain are not defined as Cox If your name servicer records are not defined as ns1.coxmail.com or ns2.coxmail.com you do not need to make any changes.
