The static IP passes through the cable modem, and no configuration on the modem is required. The static IP is configured on the device that is connected to the modem.
Note: Static IP must be configured on the device connected to the modem by the user. The connected device does not automatically receive an IP address like a dynamic IP assigned via DHCP.
- A Cox Business technician supplies the static IP address, gateway address, subnet mask, and Domain Name System (DNS) settings needed for your Local Area Network LAN )device.
- Only a single IP address is available for the device connected to the modem.
- You can supply your own router with a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server and Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide IP service to multiple devices connected to the router.
Use Case
A single static IP address is connecting a single device to the modem. The cable modem has a single LAN Ethernet port and only allows a single IP address to pass through the Cox network. In this use case, you provide the following.
- Router
- Firewall SD-WAN
- Other LAN management devices
Note: If connectivity is needed for more than one device, the router performs NAT and DHCP to enable the additional connectivity.
