Read these tips before your next move.
While moving to a new home can feel exciting, the act of having to actually move can be daunting and overwhelming. Between packing and hiring movers, there’s a lot that needs to happen before you can settle into your new home. Here are a few moving tips that can help ease the transition.
1. Create a Schedule
First things, first—create a to-do list to help plan your move. It’s easy to procrastinate and put things off until you realize it’s moving day and you’re not ready to go. Avoid running around at the last minute by writing out a detailed timetable that includes everything that needs to be done. Start preparing at least a month before your moving day to give yourself enough time to hire movers, pack, transfer utility items and clean. By breaking down your tasks over the course of the month, you can help lighten the load on the last day.
2. Organize Your Items
It’s easy to accumulate a lot of stuff after you’ve lived in one place for a while. However, not everything needs to move with you. Turn on Netflix, find the Marie Kondo series and get rid of anything that doesn’t bring you joy. If you haven’t used it in a while or you never even took it out of its original packaging—sell it, donate it or throw it away. Declutter your life so you can pack and move fewer items to your new home.
3. Label Boxes
Nothing is worse than getting to your new home, being surrounded by boxes and not knowing where everything is. Make things easier by labeling each box with what’s inside it. On the same note, keep things organized by grouping corresponding items together. For example, don’t mix your bathroom items with your kitchen utensils. If it helps, you can label boxes numerically, then start a list with items under each number. That way when you get to your new home and need a blow dryer, you know exactly which box to open.
4. Schedule Movers
Why do all the heavy lifting when you can get some help? Whether you want to hire professional movers or enlist the help of your friends, make sure to plan ahead. The summer months are peak moving season, which means a lot of the professional companies will be booked. Do your research, compare prices and book in advance to avoid any delays in your move in date. If your friends are kind enough to help you move, make sure you have everything ready on moving day to make it as easy as possible for them.
5. Call Service Providers
Avoid sitting in the dark in your new home and call your service providers ASAP. The last thing you want to happen after moving all day is realize that you forgot to transfer your utilities. Electricity, internet and cable are all important elements that make a home functional. Service providers like Cox make it easy to check what services are available in your new zip code by just entering your new address online. Find the right internet plan and set up your Panoramic Wifi and cable in just a few clicks or a call so you can relax while surfing, streaming or gaming when the moving is done.
6. Change Your Address
Can’t find that Amazon package you ordered last week? It might be sitting at your old address. Having to track down your mail after you've moved isn’t a fun activity. Avoid this scenario by changing your address immediately after you move. You can either go online or visit your local post office to put in a change of address to have your mail forwarded. Nothing says you’re home like receiving an envelope with your name on it.
