Speeds and Data Plans Information for Internet Service

Updated: June 20, 2023

Cox Internet service is offered in a variety of different packages of speeds and features designed to fit your needs. The following information describes the speeds and features of current Cox Internet plans, and additional network services information. This information will be updated from time to time as the services and features change. It also describes Cox’s current monthly Internet data plans and data overage policies, which are subject to change.  Packages vary by location and not all packages are available in all Cox areas. To view another location, change your selection in the top bar at the right.

The maximum speeds listed below reflect Cox’s network performance and total bandwidth/capacity provided to an individual home. Actual speeds experienced by specific devices within a home can vary depending upon many factors, including, for example, router and Ethernet port capacity, device (laptop/computer/phone) capabilities, the number of devices in use within the home, wired or wifi connection, and overall network utilization. Generally, for an individual device to receive the maximum speeds listed below, that device must have exclusive use of the internet service within the home and all equipment connected to the Cox network and any customer devices must be capable of supporting the maximum speed (exceptions may apply).  In addition, commercial speed tests may not reflect Cox’s maximum speeds, because they measure speeds inside the home to a point in the public Internet, which itself can be subject to delay and lag and is outside of Cox’s control.

Special Note: Internet packages and speeds vary by service area. When you go through the process of selecting an internet package online, only the upload and download speeds available to your physical address will be displayed based on the network architecture serving your physical address. See current package availability by checking your service address on Pricing and Plans.

As mentioned above, the modem you use is one factor that can impact the speeds that you experience. Please refer to Choosing the Right Cable Modem  for information on the modem requirements for specific internet packages.

Understanding speeds and data plans

Speeds: In addition to the downstream and upstream speed plan you may have, many factors outside of the Cox network can impact your speed experience. Some impacting examples include, but are not limited to, device or modem/gateway limitations, your in-home WIFI network, and the number of simultaneous users. For more information on modems, please visit (link - Choosing the Right Cable Modem).

Uninterrupted or error-free internet service, or the speed of your service, is not guaranteed. Actual speeds may vary based on type of equipment used, environmental and structural conditions in your home, number of users and other factors. Maximum available speeds may vary depending on service area. For more information on Cox Internet, see Cox Internet Service Disclosures.

Data Plans: A Data Plan is the amount of data included within your monthly Internet package, measured in Gigabytes and Terabytes, as indicated in the footnotes below. Data Usage is the amount of data, or bandwidth, used from all of your online activities. The following Cox services or video content do not count toward your data usage.

  • Cox Digital Telephone service.
  • Most video content accessed from your cable receiver, the Contour app, and on watchtv.cox.com.

Playing video content identified as Internet or TV GO does count toward your data usage. The following icons display by each applicable program title.

  • In the Contour 2 on-screen guide, content marked with the icon will count toward your data usage.
  • In the Contour app and on watchtv.cox.com, content marked with the icon will count toward your data usage if your device is connected to your Cox Internet service.

Cox will attempt to notify you by email and SMS (depending on your notifications preferences) when you pass different usage thresholds starting at 50%, depending on where you are in the cycle of your Data Plan. If you use more data than is included in your plan, we will automatically add additional data for $10 per 50 Gigabyte (GB) block for that usage period and a charge of $10 will be reflected on your bill. Each time you need another 50 GB block, it will be automatically applied to your account and $10 will be added to your bill until you reach your $100 limit on data overage charges ($30 limit for ConnectAssist customers) or until your next usage cycle begins. Cox will credit you for the overage charges on your bill the first time you use more data than your data plan. You can always check your Data Usage by going to the Data Usage Meter located in Internet Tools. Please verify that we have the email address to which you prefer to receive email notification. Please visit my account profile and setting to update the email address in your profile.

All services and plans subject to Cox Residential Customer Service Agreement  (including mandatory arbitration provisions), Acceptable Use Policy (including Cox’s right to terminate service for abuse of network), and other policies.

Footnotes

  1. Data Plans: A Data Plan is the amount of data included within your monthly Internet package, measured in Gigabytes and Terabytes, as indicated above.

  2. Maximum Message Size: This is the largest email you can send or receive, including attachments and encoding. Not all ISPs may accept messages of this size. Email messages will not be sent or received if they exceed the maximum message size or if they would cause the storage limit on your mailbox to be exceeded.

  3. Dormant Mailbox Deleted: Any primary or secondary mailbox that is not checked for new email for at least 120 days following the last access by the user will be permanently deleted, and the contents will no longer be available. New messages sent to a mailbox that has been deleted will not be delivered. Customers will retain the right to the associated User ID as long as they remain a Cox customer in good standing and do not release the User ID. The Primary email account holder may reactivate dormant secondary mailboxes that have been deleted through Internet Tools, but may not reactivate mailboxes that have been deleted for inactivity as set forth above.

  4. Trash Folder Contents Deleted: Content in the Trash, Deleted Items, and/or any other folder where deleted messages are sent in Cox Webmail or on any other mail client may be deleted at any time and without notice. The Trash, Deleted Items, and similar folders are not message storage folders, and deleted messages are not retrievable. A message may be retained by downloading the message via POP-3 (like using Outlook Express) or moving it to a folder in Cox WebMail or the applicable mail client other than the Trash or Deleted Items folders (subject to mailbox size limits).

  5. Unread Message Retention in Inbox Folder: Messages that are marked as "unread" and remain in the Inbox for more than sixty (60) days are subject to deletion without notice. A message may be retained by downloading it via a POP-3 client (such as Outlook Express), moving it to an alternative folder in WebMail, or by marking it as "Read."

  6. Message Retention in Spam Folder: Messages that remain in the Spam folder for more than twenty-one (21) days after receipt are subject to deletion without notice. A message in the Spam Folder may be retained indefinitely only by moving it to an alternative folder in WebMail (subject to mailbox size limits).

  7. Email Account Message Sending Limits: To control automated spam messages, you may not send multiple messages beyond a limited number in an automated fashion (i.e., using a mass mailing client). Specific limits are not published because they vary from time to time depending on a variety of factors, but the limits are set such that a typical user should not be impacted. Cox uses other measures to control spam, including limiting the ability to send email from accounts that Cox believes are being abused, or have been compromised, for the purpose of sending spam. Again, typical users should not be impacted by these limits.

*Applies only to existing Cox email accounts. As of August 15, 2019, we will no longer offer Cox Internet customers the ability to create new Cox email accounts. This change does not impact existing Cox email accounts. We will continue to support email service for customers that have email accounts created before August 15, 2019.
