Port-out fraud, also known as unauthorized mobile phone number porting, occurs when a fraudster uses your stolen cellular account information to transfer your phone number and account to another carrier. Phone companies have established safeguards to protect this process, such as having account holders set up a PIN or a password they must provide when calling about their account. But scammers with enough of your personal information can interfere, hijacking your phone number and with it your identity.
How to Tell if Your Number Has Been Ported-Out
The following are signs of port-out fraud.
- Your phone going dark
- Your phone only allowing 911 calls
If your device is showing any of these characteristics, change your password, update TSV settings if applicable, and add Number Lock Protection in MyAccount. If you believe you are a victim of port-out fraud, contact Cox.
