Learn about internet data usage
1.25 TB of data included every month
Whether you’re streaming your favorite show or video chatting with your friends, your data is what gets the job done. Our internet plans automatically come with 1.25 TB (terabytes) of data every month to help you connect to everything important.
HOW IS YOUR DATA USED
What can you do with 1.25 TB of data every day?
Keep a family full of gamers, TV buffs and social media stars happy. 1.25 TB is more than enough data for the majority of households. Here are a few examples of what your household could do with 1.25 TB every day in a month.
Streaming
Stream 10 hours of your favorite shows in HD video and music for 7+ hours every day.
Gaming
Play online multi-player games with your friends and family for 3 hours every day.
Video chat
Video chat for your work-from-home meetings and remote learning needs 8 hours every day.
Other activities
Browse different websites and also check your emails for 9 hours every day.
Use the Data Usage Calculator to estimate your household's monthly usage.
your activity and devices
What impacts data usage?
All downloaded and uploaded data delivered over your Cox Internet service counts towards your data plan. There are two main factors that contribute to your monthly data usage.
Your activity
How you use your internet impacts your data usage. For example, watching an hour of streaming content uses a higher amount of data than an hour of checking emails.
Your devices
The number of internet connected devices and the number of people using these devices in your household also impacts data usage. More devices connected to the same network means more data being used.
I've gone over my data plan
What happens if I go over my data plan?
If it's your first time going over, we’ll issue a one-time courtesy credit that covers any overage charges in that cycle.
If you go over in future billing cycles, we’ll automatically add another 50 gigabytes for $10 and so on until you reach our $100 limit of data overage charges or until your next usage cycle begins.
(No data overage charges* for ConnectAssist customers. *Subject to Cox Acceptable Use Policy)
how to monitor data usage
Track your household’s usage

how to lower your data usage
Try these five easy tips
Adjust your image and video quality settings in streaming apps and websites such as Netflix or Hulu. Higher quality settings (HD, 4K) consume a large amount of data.
Disable the auto-play feature on streaming apps. Netflix, YouTube, and other platforms often automatically continue to play new content even after the original video concludes.
Make sure to close out any apps you are no longer using. Video streams on services like Netflix or apps on your Contour Stream Player continue to consume data if you leave them running.
If you have a security camera, go into settings to reduce resolution and frequency of uploads (recording only when motion is detected instead of 24/7, for example).
Cloud services like iCloud and Google Drive often back up your files automatically in the background. Check your settings to ensure only the items you really need are being uploaded.

Yes. Most Internet service providers (ISP) base their data plans around data usage.
When does my data limit reset?
Each month, your monthly usage cycle will start and end on the same dates. It’s worth noting that usage cycle dates are different than the dates on your bill. Additionally, these dates can be found on the data usage meter on the Cox app and on Cox.com.
How much data do I need now that I am working from home a lot?
With 1.25 TB of data, we believe this amount is more than enough to cover extra usage. Check out the data usage calculator to pinpoint how much data you think you’ll need.
How do I know how much data I have used?
There are several ways you can keep track of your data usage. Cox.com offers a Data Usage Meter—which is also available on the Cox app. If you use the Cox app, you have the ability to add a miniature meter widget to your smartphone’s home screen. If you’re using Panoramic Wifi, you can use the Panoramic Wifi app to see which devices are using the most data in your household. Additionally, you can set notification preferences to alert you via SMS or email when you reach certain thresholds towards your included monthly data.
I don’t think I am receiving my data usage notifications.
Check to make sure your email address and phone number are correct in the My Profile section of your account.
Are there restrictions on how I can use my Internet connection?
All data plans are subject to the Acceptable Use Policy, including potential actions for abuse. The Acceptable Use Policy prohibits activities that negatively impact network performance for you and other customers. The use of servers, or file-sharing applications that consume extreme amounts of data that could impede traffic flow for your immediate area are just a few examples
